Munster High School Health Courses
Requirements under Indiana Code 

The following topics are required under Indiana Law as part of the Health Course at Munster High School:

1. IC 20-30-5-11: Alcoholic beverages, tobacco, prescription drugs, and controlled substances
2. IC 20-30-5-12: Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)
3. IC 20-30-5-20: Instruction in cardiopulmonary resuscitation and use of an automated external defibrillator
4. IC 20-30-5-15: Breast Cancer and Testicular Cancer Instruction   
5. IC 20-30-5-16: Human organ and blood donor program instruction

Indiana Code also requires instruction on the following:

IC 20-30-5-13: Instruction on Human Sexuality or sexually transmitted infections

Teachers throughout instruction on human sexuality or sexually transmitted infections shall do the following:

1. Teachers will teach that abstinence from sexual activity outside of marriage is the standard
2. Teachers will teach that abstinence from sexual activity is the only way to avoid out-of-wedlock pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, and other associated health problems
3. Teachers will include instruction that the best way to avoid sexually transmitted infections and other associated health problems is to establish a mutually faithful monogamous relationship in the context of marriage
4. Teachers will include age-appropriate instruction concerning the importance of consent to sexual activity between two individuals
5. Teachers will provide a presentation on human growth and development during pregnancy that is medically accurate and age-appropriate. (Video included in curriculum section)

Indiana Code requires parents to consent to this instruction IC 20-30-5-17:

Access to materials relating to instruction on human sexuality, personal analysis, evaluation, or survey of students; consent and procedure for participation.

1. Personal analysis, evaluation, and survey of students will not take place during health classes
2. Instruction on Human Sexuality
